Open Question: Being unrealistic?

My family and my wife think I am not being realistic in my decision. I lost my job in Tennessee and my home and had to move across the country to Washington state to stay with family. As a profession I am a computer technician currently working on my next certification. I've been in this field since I was a teenager (am 26 now) and I am thinking of changing professions. I am also tired of the economy and the direction it is going and I want to be my own boss. I was thinking since I am pretty good with my hands and have some past experience working with wood that I could build simple wood furniture to start. I already have the tools so the only investment would be materials to start out small. My wife and family aren't confident in my abilities and think I "have my head in the clouds".
